The arrival of a piped water supply at Mount William Station has given new confidence to the historic Grampians farming property and helped secure its place as a five-star hospitality destination.

For owner and operator Will Abbott (pictured), a reliable mains connection is the foundation of his luxury stay experience.

“You can’t run a luxury accommodation business without water,” Mr Abbott said.

Once one of the state’s largest sheep and wool properties, the fifth-generation farm south of Willaura now blends traditional sheep and cattle production with a prestige stay in the original homestead.

The estate’s expansive heritage gardens, swimming pool and tennis court all depend on a steady, high-quality water supply — as do the property’s livestock and day-to-day operations.

“Winter here is lovely and green, but summer can be very different,” Mr Abbott explained.

“Having piped water has made a huge difference. It helps us maintain the gardens, keep guest amenities running and care for our animals all year round.”

From rain dependence to reliable supply

Until recently the station relied heavily on rainwater tanks and farm dams. That system left the property vulnerable during hot, dry spells.

The switch to a piped supply ended much of that uncertainty and allowed the business to plan and operate with far greater confidence.

“This change isn’t just about convenience — it’s about resilience,” Mr Abbott said.

“Knowing we have a dependable supply means we can keep offering the quality experience guests expect, even in tough seasons.”

What the East Grampians Rural Pipeline will do for others

While Mount William Station’s piped water comes from an earlier project, the East Grampians Rural Pipeline (being delivered by GWMWater and constructed by Mitchell Water Australia) will bring similar benefits to landholders and towns within its own footprint.

The project involves laying hundreds of kilometres of pipe, constructing new pump stations and expanding storages to secure water for the future.
